WESTPORT–The Westport Library will take part in the nationwide reading of the Declaration of Independence on Wednesday, July 8, at 7 p.m.

The reading will reenact the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in the United States by Colonel John Nixon at the Pennsylvania State House on July 8, 1776.

The library is taking part in an initiative that invites Americans across all 50 states and 16 territories to read the Declaration together on July 8, 2026 — simultaneously, across nine time zones and some 9,500 miles, from the Caribbean to the western edge of the Pacific.

According to the release, in addition to the reading, there will be a craft for kids, and people of all ages may view a copy of the Declaration of Independence gifted to all 169 Connecticut towns, provided by the Connecticut Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and printed to celebrate America 250.
