WESTPORT — A good day for good deeds.

That’s what Temple Israel reports occurred May 1 — Mitzvah Day — when more than 150 members of the congregation turned out to do good deeds of all kinds to help people in need.

The mitzvahs — meaning good deed in Hebrew — were carried out to support others locally, in area communities and around the world.

Among the mitzvahs performed by Temple Israel members   were:

  • Ten thousand meals donated to refugees from the war in Ukraine, though the Outreach Program.
  • Two hundred “comfort” bags for hospitalized children, via Brady’s Smile.
  • Dozens of lap blankets, walker bags, potted plants and centerpieces donated to Jewish Senior Services and the Weston Senior Center.
  • One hundred toiletry bags for Bridgeport Rescue Mission.
  • Twelve lasagnas baked and delivered to Homes with Hope.
  • One hundred bagged lunches for Gillespie Center.
  • Thirty Mother’s Day cards for women fighting breast cancer.
  • Fifty cards and letters delivered to members of the U.S. armed services and Israel Defense Force soldiers.
