WESTPORT — A good day for good deeds.
That’s what Temple Israel reports occurred May 1 — Mitzvah Day — when more than 150 members of the congregation turned out to do good deeds of all kinds to help people in need.
The mitzvahs — meaning good deed in Hebrew — were carried out to support others locally, in area communities and around the world.
Among the mitzvahs performed by Temple Israel members were:

- Ten thousand meals donated to refugees from the war in Ukraine, though the Outreach Program.
- Two hundred “comfort” bags for hospitalized children, via Brady’s Smile.
- Dozens of lap blankets, walker bags, potted plants and centerpieces donated to Jewish Senior Services and the Weston Senior Center.
- One hundred toiletry bags for Bridgeport Rescue Mission.
- Twelve lasagnas baked and delivered to Homes with Hope.
- One hundred bagged lunches for Gillespie Center.
- Thirty Mother’s Day cards for women fighting breast cancer.
- Fifty cards and letters delivered to members of the U.S. armed services and Israel Defense Force soldiers.
