Learn boating safety here in Westport with a state-mandated course offered by U.S. Coast Guard veteran Barry Natale on Aug. 18 and 20. The eight-hour classroom course will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. each evening at VFW Post 399, 465 Riverside Ave., on the Saugatuck River.

Participants who successfully complete the course and pass a final exam will be eligible to obtain a Connecticut Safe Boating Certificate, which is required to operate a motorboat, personal watercraft or a sailboat that is 19.5′ or longer on Connecticut waters.

Natale, a Post 399 member, is a retired U.S. Coast Guard chief boatswain mate with significant search and rescue experience on Long Island Sound and beyond. He also has experience operating commercial passenger vessels such as the Sheffield Island Ferry.
