WESTPORT — Here’s a chance to put to rest one of the peskier items on your to-do list.

Old mattresses and box springs will be collected for recycling Saturday, May 20, at Earthplace, 10 Woodside Lane.

The free program, organized by Sustainable Westport, Bye, Bye Mattress and Earthplace, will take place from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Mattresses must be dry, unsoiled and not infested by bed bugs or pests of any kind to be accepted for recycling.

Scouts from Troop 36 are offering a pick-up service to bring mattresses from Westport homes to the collection site. Signups for the service end May 17; for additional details and to register, click here. Suggested donation is $20.

As much as 90 percent of the collected materials can be reprocessed into new products like carpet pads, cushioning for exercise equipment and bike seats, insulation, air filters and steel materials, according to program organizers.
