WESTPORT — The summertime ban on dogs at town beaches recedes into the seasonal mists as of Tuesday, with a hitch — literally.
While Parks and Recreation Department policies allow dogs to return to the beaches starting Tuesday, Oct. 1, through next March 31, the animals must be on a leash.
At Compo, dogs are permitted to run off leash only in the designated area south of the pavilion, including South Beach. Dogs also are prohibited from the pavilion, playground and walkways.
Owners are required to pick up their dogs’ feces.
Fines of $77 will be imposed for violations of any of the regulations, according to an announcement by Rick Giunta, parks and recreation deputy director.
Officials remind pet owners that the year-round prohibition on all animals at playgrounds and athletic fields remains in effect.
