WESTPORT — It wasn’t a major incident of vandalism, but at least one town official took umbrage with the desecration of the Minuteman Statue overnight.

“I wouldn’t use the word vandalism because it’s a very strong word,” said Andrew Colabella, a District 4 member of the Representative Town Meeting.

What could be described as either silicone breasts or faux implants were affixed with adhesive to the base of the legendary statue at the corner of Compo Road South and Compo Beach Road.

They were removed but not before Colabella grabbed a couple pictures that he posted on Facebook, sharing his disgust for the nature of the act.

“I’m all for when they dress up the statue on certain holidays because the people who do it usually take it down the day or two later,” he said this evening. “But this was completely despicable if anything.”

Colabella, who grew up in town, said he has helped maintain this statue since 2008, when he began with the Parks and Recreation Department’s crew.

“Long after I left the department, I still maintained it,” he said.

The statue was cleaned up during the day Tuesday, but Colabella still didn’t like the spirit of the prank.

“This is not what Westport is,” he said.
