WESTPORT–Thousands of people from Westport and Fairfield County are expected to gather on Saturday for a No Kings protest through downtown.

Darcy Hicks, of DefenDemocracy of CT, said the event is for “protesting the current attack on democracy and honoring the longstanding, historic commitment to … basic human rights.”

This Saturday’s protest will echo the demonstrations that took place downtown in April and June.

As a national phenomenon, Time magazine reports that more than 2,500 events are scheduled and millions of people are expected to gather on Saturday across the country.

According to Hicks, the protest will start at Jesup Green and march through downtown to Veteran’s Green. Attendees will march from Jesup Green starting at 11 a.m.

At Veteran’s Green, across from Town Hall, there will be musical performances and speeches from, among others, US Congressman Jim Himes, State Representatives Jonathan Steinberg, Dominique Johnson and Matt Blumenthal and State Senator Ceci Maher.

The event is also reminiscent of a 1913 march through town. The 1913 march featured suffragists advocating for women’s right to vote, according to Hicks.
