WESTPORT — Powerful thunderstorms, expected to break the stifling heat and humidity gripping the region, knocked out power overnight to hundreds in Westport.

By 4:30 a.m. Thursday, however, power outages had been restored to all but 50 of the 12,694 total customers in town, according to the power company, Eversource.

Two waves of storms ripped through the region about 8 and 11 p.m. Wednesday, according to National Weather Service data, with rainfall — driven by blustery wind — measured at approximately a half-inch during each period.

Weather today and tomorrow, according to the NWS, will be less hot and humid than the preceding week, when the heat index sometimes felt as though it was approximately 100 degrees.

The high temperature Thursday is expected to reach the mid-80s under partly cloudy skies, according to the forecast, with no precipitation anticipated until early next week.

Friday will be sunny with high temperatures again in the mid-80s, before the readings begin to climb to the 90-degree range over the weekend.
