SOUTHPORT — The Pequot Library will welcome a historian and Yale University professor this week for a presentation highlighting the changes to the United States federal government over time, as well as the comparatively sluggish pace in updating the Constitution.

Mark Peterson will be at the library for an author talk at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 9th. Peterson will be discussing his latest book, The Making and Breaking of the American Constitution: A Thousand-Year History.

In the book, Peterson argues that while the government has changed significantly over time to keep pace with the modern era, the Constitution has changed very little. He suggests that this growing disconnect presents a threat to U.S. democracy and requires an update to the Constitution that preserves the ideals of the Founding Fathers while meeting the challenges of the future.

Peterson is the Edmund S. Morgan Professor of History at Yale and the author of two additional books: The City-State of Boston: The Rise and Fall of an Atlantic Power, 1630-1865 and The Price of Redemption: The Spiritual Economy of Puritan New England.
