NORWALK – Indoor snowstorms, immersive movies, and Santa Claus visiting the shark tank are some of the family-friendly programs coming up this holiday season at The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk.

The aquarium recently announced a full slate of holiday-themed events, which run from Friday, Nov. 28 through Sunday, Jan. 4. The event schedule includes:

  • Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in 4D (through Jan. 4): Enjoy an immersive adaptation of the holiday classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in the aquarium’s 4D theater. This 10-minute version of the film uses visual and sensory effects to amplify the experience for viewers.
  • Flurry Zone! An Indoor Snow Experience (throughout December): Visit the Newman’s Own Hall on the hour, every hour to revel in a five-minute simulated snow flurry! No need for boots or coats; just enjoy the fun!
  • Elf Power Virtual Reality Experience: This holiday-themed experience takes guests on a ride in Santa’s turbocharged sleigh as he helps a child believe in the magic of Christmas again. Soar through dazzling landscapes, feel the wind on your face, and meet surprise guests along the way.
  • Member Appreciation Morning (Nov. 28): Members of The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk can visit early from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. to enjoy treats from Elm Street Diner, gift shop discounts, and a special thank you gift. The aquarium is upgrading all memberships to Family Plus level for this day only, allowing members to bring more family and friends.
  • Shark Diving Santa (Saturdays and Sundays, Dec. 6 to Dec. 21): Stop by the Ocean Beyond the Sound exhibit at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to see the unforgettable sight of Santa Claus swimming alongside tiger sharks.
  • Breakfast with Santa (Dec. 6): This members-only event features Santa as a special guest at a breakfast buffet, available 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Guests can also enjoy holiday crafts and a showing of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in the 4D theater. Pajamas or other festive attire are allowed, and encouraged!
  • Holiday Sensory-Friendly Evening (Dec. 9): This special event uses dimmed lights, softened music, and limited sounds to transform the aquarium into a peaceful winter wonderland for those with sensory sensitivities. Guests can include a specially modified screening of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and an optional add-on with Santa Claus.
  • Noon Year’s Eve Celebration (Dec. 31): Children can celebrate the festivities of New Year’s Eve without getting overtired at this celebration, which runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Families can enjoy music, crafts, face painting, and a festive countdown.

The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk is open every day during the holiday season except Christmas Day, and closes early at 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve. For more information on individual events, visit maritimeaquarium.org.
