WESTPORT — A celebration of Japanese culture will take place Sept. 7 on Jesup Green.
The annual Japanese Fall Festival, hosted by the Japan Society of Fairfield County, is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, on the downtown green off Jesup Road. (Rain date is Sunday, Sept. 8.)
Features will include taiko drumming, performances of Japanese folktales, martial arts and calligraphy demonstrations, Bon dancing, meditation sessions and a market with Japanese crafts, jewelry, kimonos, ceramics, spices and more.
Kicking off the event will be a round of taiko drumming by New York Taiko Aiko Kai of the Taiko Society of Teacher’s College, Columbia University. Later, the group will lead a hands-on workshop on the drumming technique.

Attendees also will be invited to join in Japanese traditional dancing, with some routines choreographed by the Takarabune troupe.
A new feature will be demonstrations of Radio Taiso, a gentle fitness routine set to music, introduced in Japan nearly a century ago and still regularly practiced with 6:30 a.m. daily broadcasts on television and radio.
