WESTPORT — A bright start for the holidays officially took place as Town Hall’s Christmas tree was illuminated amid song and seasonal cheer Thursday evening.
Despite frigid weather, a crowd of all ages gathered for carols sung by Staples High School’s Orphenians, a Christmas poem read by Donna Disch, the town’s poet laureate, and hot chocolate and candy canes for all.
First Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker presided at the ceremony, wishing happy holidays to all Westporters. “As we join together for the lighting of this magnificent tree, we’re joining communities across the country and the world in welcoming the Christmas season,” she said.
“However we choose to celebrate traditions and holidays,” the first selectwoman said, “we know that these unique elements of Westport are channeled through all of us, and through all of you here tonight, in our families and our friends and our neighbors.”
Disch, who was introduced by Tooker, read her original work, “Lights Up,” a poem about Christmas and the warmth it provides to all who celebrate.
Afterward, Tooker invited children to come stand with her for the countdown to switching on the tree lights.
As lights on the towering fir tree in front of Town Hall glowed, fire truck sirens blared — signaling an official welcome to the sights and sounds of the season.
