
WESTPORT — A coalition to “Feed the Need,” helping alleviate hunger in the community, will sponsor a food collection Saturday at the Stop & Shop supermarket on Post Road East.
The collection 0f non-perishable foods will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at the store, 1790 Post Road East.
Donations will benefit the food pantries at Homes with Hope’s Gillespie Center and the town’s Department of Human Services.
Joining forces to organize the food drive are the Westport Police Department, the Westport Woman’s Club, the Westport Rotary Club, Homes with Hope and the Department of Human Services.
Examples of non-perishable foods that will be accepted include: apple sauce, barbecue sauce, boxed potatoes, and canned meat, tuna, chicken, spam, stew, chili or corned beef hash.
Also, pasta, rice, tomato sauce, canned soups, canned vegetables or fruit, hot or cold cereal, coffee, tea, catsup, mustard, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, jelly and syrup, as well as other boxed or canned food products.
Organizers, however, ask that no food donations be in glass jars or bottles.
