Drug Take Back Day

WESTPORT — The town’s annual “Drug Take-Back Day,” where unwanted prescription drugs will be collected, on April 27 will also include a Wellness Fair featuring health screenings and behavioral resources.

Both programs will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at the Westport Center for Senior Activities, 21 Imperial Ave.

Drug Take-Back Day, co-sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, is a no-cost collection of expired or unwanted prescription drugs, such as tablets, capsules, patches and solid forms of other prescribed medications. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in original containers. Caps must be tightly sealed.

Syringes, sharps and illicit drugs will not be accepted.

The drug collection is organized annually by the DEA and local officials to help prevent overdoses and curb the nationwide opioid epidemic, which often have roots in abuse of prescription medications, according to the agency’s announcement.

The Wellness Fair, organized by Positive Directions, will feature a range of health resources, such as blood-pressure screenings, nutrition and dietary advice, tips about preventing tick- and mosquito-borne diseases, and a sensory table for relaxation.

There also will be addiction-prevention resources, including drunk goggles, liquor stickers, lock bags, Narcan demonstrations and gambling-dependency information.

Tastings of non-alcoholic beer will be offered in recognition of Alcohol Awareness Month.
