WESTPORT—As families prepare for the upcoming school year, Westport Human Services is seeing an increased need for assistance from local working families—and an urgent need for community donations to meet that demand. The Department of Human Services is asking the community to help ensure that every child begins the school year with the supplies and resources they need to succeed.
“Back-to-school expenses can place a significant strain on many families,” said Annette D’Augelli, Youth & Family Specialist for the Westport Department of Human Services. “The generosity of our community helps children start the school year feeling prepared, confident, and ready to learn.”
Human Services is seeking donations of new school supplies, backpacks, Walmart gift cards, and monetary contributions to support local children and families. Needed items include new notebooks, folders, binders, pencils, pens, crayons, colored pencils, markers, glue sticks, scissors, highlighters, calculators, and other essential classroom supplies.
Gift cards may be dropped off at the Westport Department of Human Services, located at Town Hall, during regular business hours. Monetary donations may be made by check payable to Westport Human Services or online at www.westportct.gov/donate by selecting “Family to Family Programs—Seasonal Program.”
A safe place for children—and a lifeline for working parents
In addition to back-to-school donations, Human Services is also seeking financial support for its Afterschool Program, which serves children in kindergarten through fifth grade. The financial assistance program provides a safe, supportive environment where children can receive homework assistance, participate in enriching activities, build friendships, and develop important social and emotional skills after school.
“Afterschool Program assistance is an essential lifeline for many working families and provides children with opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive beyond the classroom,” D’Augelli said. “Community donations help ensure we can continue offering high-quality programming to the children who depend on it.”
Elaine Daignault, Director of the Westport Department of Human Services, emphasized the impact of community giving. “Our residents have always demonstrated extraordinary compassion and generosity,” Daignault said. “Every backpack, gift card, school supply, and financial contribution helps ease the burden on families and gives children the tools they need for a successful school year. We are deeply grateful for the community’s continued support.”
Both the Back-to-School and Afterschool Programs are 100% funded by community donations and contributions. Without that support, these programs would not be possible.
