WESTPORT — Shoppers here and across Connecticut will get a break at the checkout during the annual “Sales Tax Free Week,” from today (Sunday, Aug. 15) through Saturday, Aug. 21.
The state’s 6.35 percent sales tax during that period will not apply to a range of clothes and footwear priced under $100. The sales tax exemption applies to each eligible item under the $100 threshold, regardless of how many of those goods are sold on an individual invoice, according to a statement from Gov. Ned Lamont.
“Having this tax-free holiday helps working families stretch their dollar a little bit more during the busy back-to-school season, while giving businesses an extra boost to their bottom line,” Lamont said in the statement.
Some retailers also plan to offer additional discounts in conjunction with the sales tax exemptions, according to the statement.
- Examples of clothes and footwear, ticketed for less than $100, exempt from the sales tax include: jeans, sneakers, dresses, shirts, blouses, diapers, hats and undergarments, as well as wedding gowns, ear muffs, shoelaces and square dancing clothes.
- Goods not sales tax exempt, regardless of whether they cost less than $100, include: lobster bibs, cleated sports shoes, party costumes, athletic supporters, barrettes, umbrellas and, perhaps somewhat ironically, wallets.
