WESTPORT — Singer/songwriter Patti Smith, known for her literary achievements along with a decades-long musical legacy, will headline opening night of VersoFest 2025 at the Westport Library in April.

Joining Smith in the spotlight at the four-day event are Henry Rollins, also known for his musical and spoken-word performances, and Paul Shaffer, the longtime musical director and band leader for David Letterman’s late-night television talk shows.

VersoFest will showcase a range of “music, media and creativity,” with performances, panel discussions and workshops from April 3-6 at the library, 20 Jesup Road.

Tickets for the three marquee programs will go on sale later this month and, according to the library’s announcement, more featured artists will be added to the event’s lineup.

Smith, who will appear Thursday, April 3, came to prominence in 1975 with the album, “Horses,” and is known for her songs “Gloria” and “Because the Night.” She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, and previously was honored at the library’s 2011 “Booked for the Evening” event.

In 2010, Smith won the National Book Award for her memoir, “Just Kids,” and also is known for her photography and poetry.

“As a musician, painter, author and an iconic original, [Smith] represents the very spirit of VersoFest, and it is an incredible opportunity for tri-state area fans get to see a true living legend in our intimate, accessible venue,” William Harmer, the library’s executive director, said in a  statement announcing her appearance.

Rollins, frontman of the hardcore punk band Black Flag, writer and spoken-word performer, will appear “in conversation” on Saturday, April 5. He established his own record label and publishing company, releasing a variety of books and spoken-word albums, and has had acting roles in movies and television.

Shaffer, known for his decades-long musical role on David Letterman’s television shows, was a “Saturday Night Live” performer and has recorded albums and performed with the World’s Most Dangerous Band. He will appear Sunday, April 6, with SNL’s Beehive Queen Christine Ohlman.
