The production, combining elements of the Hitchcock film with “a dash of Monty Python’s zany humor,” according to publicity for the show, has received Tony and Drama Desk awards.
“The 39 Steps” storyline features an international spy ring trying to steal British military secrets in the 1930s, performed by a cast of four portraying more than 100 characters with rapid changes of costumes, wigs, mustaches and accents, according to the playhouse.
The performers include Joe Delafield, Patrick Halley, Sharone Sayegh and Evan Zes. The production is directed by Mark Shanahan, the playhouse artistic director.

The next presentation in the playhouse’s “Script in Hand” playreading series will be “Witch,” described as “a new take on bargaining with the devil.”
