WESTPORT — Prints by Mary Scott Himes will be on display in the May “artist-of-the-month” exhibit at the Westport Book Shop.

The prints “explore questions of identity and the female body,” according to the exhibit’s announcement, and will be on view through May 31 at the book shop, 23 Jesup Road.

A reception for the artist will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at the shop. To register to attend, call 203-349-5141 or email RSVP@westportbooksaleventures.org.

“I started making things again during my treatments for breast cancer in 2021,” Himes said a statement about her work. “Cancer has taken many things from me, but my art practice is what I took from it.

“My creative explorations allow me to delve into questions of identity, the ideal standards for female beauty, and the ways in which our self perception can be warped by the expectations of the culture in which we reside — one that idolizes youth and imposes impossible-to-meet criteria about our looks,” she added.

Himes was an editor for “atHome,” “American Homestyle & Gardening” and “Colonial Homes” magazines. She also co-founded and was the executive director of the Unload Foundation, a Connecticut-based arts initiative that developed educational and cultural events to raise awareness about issues relating to gun rights, gun use and gun violence.

The wife of U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, D-4, she holds a BA in history/art history from McGill University and a BFA in environmental design from the Parsons School of Design.
