WESTPORT — A production about football coaching great Vince Lombardi will kick off this year’s “Script in Hand” play-reading series Feb. 5 at the Westport Country Playhouse.

Lombardi is portrayed both on and off the field, showing “the legendary coach in ways that make him human, while also telling the stories of those who loved him, including wife Marie and the players who followed him into the annals of sports history,” according to the theater’s publicity release.

Lombardi, after whom the Super Bowl trophy is named, is best known as the longtime coach of the Green Bay Packers. One of his most notable quotes is: “Winning isn’t everything, but the will to win is everything.”

“Lombardi” is written by Eric Simonson, who won a 2005 Academy Award for the short documentary, “A Note of Triumph: The Golden Age of Norman Corwin.” It is based on a book by David Maraniss, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter.

The play-reading cast includes John Ottavino as Vince Lombardi and Antoinette LaVecchia as Lombardi’s wife, Marie.
