This year’s finalists will be the first to perform a newly commissioned work by composer Lowell Liebermann.

The winner receives a cash prize of $10,000, and the other finalists each will receive $2,500.

The competition is named in tribute to Heida Hermanns, a pianist, teacher and philanthropist who founded the Connecticut Alliance for Music.

Judges for the final in-person competition include: pianist Frederic Chiu, of Westport-based Beechwood Arts & Innovation, the jury chairman and winner of an earlier Heida Hermanns competition; pianist Inna Faliks, and pianist Miki Aoki. Video audition jurists included past Heida alumni Wenjie Lyu, Julia Siciliano and Alexei Tartakovsky.

“As we continue to celebrate and elevate the talent of young pianists, this exciting new piece adds an extraordinary dimension to the competition. [Lowell] Liebermann’s composition, which reflects his unique voice and innovative style, will challenge and inspire our participants, giving them the rare opportunity to perform a world-premiere work,” Kristen Young, the MoCA performing arts director, said in a publicity statement for the competition.
