WESTPORT–The Westport Library is featuring a trio of exhibitions that celebrate the visual narratives that align with storytelling, and patrons are invited to view these engaging displays through December 16th.
The library’s Sheffer Gallery is hosting Every Picture Tells a Story: Photographs from the Westport Public Art Collections. This display includes photographs from the Westport Public Art Collections selected by guest curator Arthur Nager and Westport Library exhibit curator Carole Erger-Fass. The photographs were selected to showcase the diverse creative and technological approaches to photography, and include works by internationally known photographers as well as Westport photographers like Larry Silver and David Kalman.
The South Gallery is showcasing Black Men Reading by Larry Morse. The artist was inspired to create this ongoing series after observing fellow passengers on his subway commutes, including Black men with books in hand. Morse says this sight resonated deeply with him, since encouraging Black literacy was a punishable offense before the Civil War. The series “honors “honors the enduring strength and resilience of literacy as an act of liberation, urging new generations to reclaim the joy and power of reading as a lifelong pursuit and a cultural inheritance.”
An artist’s reception for this exhibition will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 29th.
The Jesup Gallery is featuring Art of the Album: Modern Blues, highlighting the often-overlooked medium of album art. The display features a curated selection of LPs from the collection of American blues keyboardist and record producer Mark Naftalin and his wife, Ellen Naftalin.
