WESTPORT — Art work by adults with autism and intellectual disabilities is on display this month at the Westport Book Shop.
The four artists are students in the Daniel E. Offutt Arts and Education Community Center, a program developed by CLASP Homes of Westport.
Their work, according to a release from the book shop, “reflects each of their unique styles and interpretation of a similar theme.”
Leonor Dao, an artist who teaches weekly classes at the center, describes the artists as “full of creativity and exploration,” offering one another support, encouragement and friendship. There is always a “wonderful sense of success” when the artists experiment with a new theme, subject or medium that culminates in beautiful pieces of art, she said in the statement.
The exhibit is the first by a non-profit organization at the book shop. It is open to the public during regular business hours.
The “Drew Friedman Art Place” is a section of the store dedicated to exhibiting works by community artists year-round. Miggs Burroughs, a trustee of the Drew Friedman Community Arts Center and founding member of the Artists Collective of Westport, curates the monthly exhibits.
Westport Book Shop is at 23 Jesup Road, across Jesup Green from the Westport Library. The shop is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.
