WESTPORT — Police have alerted motorists that traffic on Riverside Avenue and Wilton Road–and on the roads intersecting them–will be at a standstill late Sunday morning into the early afternoon, as the “CT United Ride” offers tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

The motorcade procession, with several thousand motorcyclists expected to participate, starts at Westport’s Sherwood Island State Park at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 30. The bikers will take over the right lane of I-95 south between exits 18 and 17, then head north on Riverside Avenue and north on Wilton Road into Wilton.

The 60-mile route includes nine other communities before ending at Seaside Park in Bridgeport.

As this year marks the 25th anniversary of 9/11, and police are expecting an increased turnout. 

Police warn that the entire route through Westport is “closed and continuous,” as the motorcade — accompanied by a police escort — will not stop at traffic lights or stop signs.

Traffic will not be allowed to cross the motorcade’s path at intersections along the route. The area will be “completely impassable until the entire procession clears,” police said in the traffic advisory.

It is expected to take at least 45 minutes for motorcyclists participating in the CT United Ride to complete the Westport segment of the route, police said.
