Yale Repertory Theatre | Hedda Gabbler

NEW HAVEN – One of Henrik Ibsen’s most complex anti-heroines will come to life on the stage as the Yale Repertory Theatre presents a new production of Hedda Gabler.

The opening production will take place at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4th. The show runs through Dec. 20th, with some shows featuring accommodations or special occasions such as discussions, ASL interpretations, and Spanish captioning.

The Yale Repertory Theatre describes Hedda Gabler as a “piercing, timeless depiction of alienation and caged ambition.” Its full description is:

“Freshly arrived from her honeymoon to her elegant, newly purchased villa, Hedda Tesman (née Gabler) wasn’t born and raised for a life of contented domesticity. When a former lover returns to town, her husband’s academic career and finances suddenly hang in the balance, along with her social standing. A propulsive, fiery, and often funny meditation on romantic dreams and bourgeois ambitions, Ibsen’s 1890 play is the portrait of a woman who will stop at nothing to gain control over her own destiny.”

The play will be the final production directed by Yale Repertory Theatre Artistic Director James Bundy, who has led dramatic events at Yale for 23 years. Marianna Gailus stars in the title role, with other cast members including Austin Durant, Felicity Jones Latta, Stephanie Machado, Max Gordon Moore, Mary Lou Rosato, and James Udom. The play was translated from its original Norwegian by Paul Walsh.
