WESTPORT — Coming off a 3-2 loss at Stamford last Thursday, Staples boys volleyball team had its work cut out with a home match against unbeaten, top-ranked Trumbull on Saturday.

The Wreckers not only bounced back and prevailed, but did so in the minimum number of sets, winning 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 28-26). 

Staples improved to 8-3 for the season and the Eagles fell to 9-1. Trumbull had beaten Staples in four sets on its home court earlier this campaign.

Pierce Brown recorded 39 kills in the five-set match against Stamford and then racked up 24 kills against Trumbull. 

Setter Brian Divino had 45 assists and added 11 blocks in the Stamford match. Against Trumbull, Divino logged 26 assists, had a key kill and a block to close out the win.

Also against Trumbull, Will Stoutenburg had six kills and four blocks; Braden Regetz amassed five kills and three blocks, and Sawyer Makl recorded two aces and a pair of digs as he battles back from injury.

Trumbull remains the top-ranked team in Class L; Staples is ranked 10th.

The Wreckers will host Harding of Bridgeport at 4 p.m. Tuesday.  (Game schedules are subject to change; click for the latest CIAC updates.)
