MANCHESTER — A Division I State Tournament second-round visit to East Catholic did not end the way a competitive Staples High boys basketball team hoped.
The No. 12 Wreckers hung in there most of the way against their No. 5-seed opponent before falling 67-53 Thursday night.
Staples led 13-12 after the first quarter, trailed 29-23 at halftime and 43-37 through three quarters. The Wreckers got it down to a one-possession game in the fourth.
But in the end, East Catholic’s Samson Reilly and his six 3-pointers and 30 total points, proved to be too much.
Mason Tobias had 15 points for Staples, Sam Clachko scored 13 and Adam Udell logged 11. Nick Sikorski dropped in nine on a trio of 3-pointers.
The loss ends a strong season for the Wreckers, who also went all the way to the FCIAC Championship game last week.
