WESTPORT — One person was sent to the hospital after a kitchen fire at the Saugatuck Cooperative apartments Friday night, forcing other residents to evacuate the building.

The incident triggered a response by all on-duty fire units to ensure flames and smoke did not spread through the 36-unit complex.

Firefighters were dispatched to the Bridge Street building shortly before 6:30 p.m. Friday to investigate the report of smoke filling a kitchen, according to the report by Assistant Fire Chief Brian Meadows.

Two fire engines, a truck and the shift commander initially were sent to the scene, where “moderate smoke” caused by the kitchen fire was filling the building’s third floor.

After fire on the kitchen stove in one apartment was quickly doused, firefighters discovered flames had spread to cabinets and walls, Meadows said.

That prompted officials to dispatch all available on-duty units to check the building’s other apartments as a precaution against the spread of smoke and fire. Firefighters from Norwalk also were called to the scene to support the operation.

One person was transported to the hospital by a Westport EMS ambulance, and police officers helped evacuate residents while smoke was ventilated from the building, according to the report.

Information about the condition of the hospitalized resident was not immediately available.

Before residents were allowed to return to their apartments firefighters metered the building to ensure the units were cleared of carbon monoxide.

Cause of the fire is being investigated by the Fire Marshal’s Office.
