WESTPORT — Top-seeded Staples edged No. 8 Fairfield Prep 13-12 in the Class LL State football quarterfinals on a cold Tuesday night at home.
Staples trailed 9-6 at halftime, but took the lead in the third quarter and hung on.
Quarterback Caleb Smith had two rushing touchdowns — one of them a 60-yard run.
The Wreckers’ defense had a big game, holding Prep to one TD and two field goals. The defense also stuffed a two-point conversion attempt.
The Wreckers will host No. 5 Southington in the semis at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. This is a rematch of a Sept. 22 game won by the Wreckers, 34-27.
Southington is coming off a 47-20 win over No. 4 Manchester.
The winner will face either No. 2 Greenwich or No. 3 West Haven in the Dec. 9 title game. Staples beat Greenwich, 24-13, last week in their Thanksgiving Day faceoff.
