WESTPORT — A Staples High School swimmer, competing as a Team USA member of the World Aquatics Junior Championships, won a silver medal in the 50-meter freestyle competition Saturday.

Annam Olasewere, the only Connecticut swimmer named to Team USA for the championships in Israel, clocked a time of 24.95 seconds to finish second in the event.

Olasewere was cheered on from the homefront Saturday as nearly 100 family, friends and teammates from the Staples swim and dive team gathered at the Westport Library to watch a broadcast of the competition.

“Community matters and great leadership matters. Thanks to the Westport community for the incredible support you have shown for Annam and my family,” Ngassam Ngnoumen, the swimmer’s mother, said in a press statement. “We are truly grateful.”

Olasewere’s younger sisters, Ayaan and Anwara, are also competitive swimmers.

Olasewere, currently a junior at Staples, plans to compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials in Indianapolis next June.
