WESTPORT — The owner of a local liquor store has been charged with selling alcohol to minors.
Jian Xiong Pan, 44, of Newtown, was arrested Aug. 14 on a charge of illegal sale of alcohol to a minor in connection with the incident at the International Wine Shop on Post Road East.
A police investigation took place after a witness reported seeing two females, who appeared younger than the legal age of 21, leave the store after purchasing alcohol about 4 p.m. Aug. 14.
A description of the females’ vehicle also was provided to police, and it was stopped by an officer a short time later heading east on Post Road East, police said.
Both females were only 18 years old, according to the police report, and they told the officer they were sold alcohol at the store without being asked to show proof they were of legal age.
The officer returned to the liquor store, where he spoke with Pan, who “recalled the transaction that had just occurred and confirmed that he sold the alcohol without verifying the age of the female,” the report states.
Pan was arrested and released after posting $500 bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned on the charge Aug. 28 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
The incident also has been referred to state liquor control officials for review, police said.
