WESTPORT — Eight problem intersections — one with the dubious distinction as among “the worst in the state” — are in line for upgrades designed to enhance pedestrian safety and cut down on traffic hazards.
The projects, announced Tuesday by state Sen. Will Haskell, D-Westport, “to improve accessibility and pedestrian safety,” will include the notorious downtown intersection of the Post Road with Route 33 (Riverside Avenue and Wilton Road).
Upgrades, which will be carried out by the state Department of Transportation, include installing street-crossing indicators with accessible pushbuttons and concurrent pedestrian phasing, according to Haskell’s statement.
Plans call for design of the installations to be finished by next February, with construction bids sought in April, Haskell said.
In addition to the Post Road/Route 33 project, the Westport intersections scheduled for upgrades include:
- Saugatuck Avenue (Route 33) at Interstate 95’s southbound ramps.
- Post Road East (Route 1) at the Playhouse Square Shopping Center driveway.
- Post Road West (Route 1) at Sylvan Road.
- Post Road East (Route 1) at Turkey Hill North and Turkey Hill South roads.
- Sherwood Island Connector at Greens Farms Road.
- Post Road East (Route 1) at the Sherwood Island Connector.
- Wilton Road (Route 33) at the Merritt Parkway Connector and Spring Hill Road.
