“The Scream” by Edvard Munch

WESTPORT — An iconic work of art sets the theme for “The Scream: A Musical Comedy Fantasy,” the next Script-in-Hand presentation at the Westport Country Playhouse.

The live play reading is set for 7 p.m. Monday, June 13, at the theater, 25 Powers Court. It will be filmed for on-demand streaming from Thursday, June 16, through Sunday, June 19.

Tickets for the live performance, costing $20, can be purchased here. Tickets for the streamed video — $20 individual, $40 pair and $80 household — are available here.

The play imagines the theft of “The Scream,” the famous painting by Norwegian painter Edvard Munch. Set in 1895,  a couple steals the painting and replaces it with the husband’s painting, “The Table,” which they feel is superior, according to a publicity release for the presentation.

The cast for the play reading includes Allen Gilmore, Maia Guest, Ryan Lowe and Drew McVety.

“What a joy to offer something a little out of the ordinary this time out with our first-ever reading of a new musical in the Script in Hand series,” Mark Shanahan, curator of the playhouse Script-in-Hand series, said in the release.

“Certainly, many will know Edvard Munch’s iconic painting of ‘The Scream,’ but the writers of this slyly inventive new musical have ensured we will never look at this famous work of art the same way again,” he added.
