WESTPORT–A New Jersey woman who allegedly tried to withdraw someone else’s money from two Westport banks turned herself in to town police on Saturday, police said.

The investigation that led to the arrest of Tierra Smikle, 26, of Plainsboro, N.J., began June 26, when the alleged victim reported to police in Middletown, Mass., that TD Bank alerted her by text of a potential fraud, police said.

The woman checked her account and found that someone had fraudulently withdrawn her money at a branch in Shelton, Conn., police said. She reported the incident to the bank’s fraud department, where an investigator later told her that someone had tried unsuccessfully to withdraw her money in person at TD Bank, 185 Main St., in Westport and also to cash a check in her name at a Wells Fargo branch, also in town, police said.

Westport police picked up the case and, via information sharing with other law enforcement agencies, identified Smikle as the suspect and obtained a warrant for her arrest.

Westport police charged Smikle with third-degree identity theft, a felony, and illegal possession of a personal identifying information access device, a misdemeanor. In the Shelton incident, she is also charged with third-degree identity theft, plus three misdemeanors: third-degree forgery, fourth-degree larceny and criminal impersonation.

She was released on $75,000 bond in the Westport case and is due to appear in Superior Court in Stamford on Oct. 28. In the Shelton case, she was released on $25,000 bond and is due in Superior Court in Derby on Nov. 13.
