WESTPORT–The Westport Astronomical Society (WAS) wants to hear ideas from the town’s young people about how to improve the Westport Observatory.

On Oct. 24, WAS is planning two sessions for students–and their parents–to share their thoughts at the observatory, 182 Bayberry Lane, Westport.

The one-hour sessions will be held at:

  • 2 p.m. for grades 3-6
  • 4 p.m. for grades 7-9.

Register to attend here.

A parent or guardian must attend with their children. For grades 3-6, parents will participate during designated portions of the discussion; for grades 7-9, the conversation will be primarily student-led, with parent input invited near the end.

“We want to hear directly from young people about what would make the observatory more exciting, welcoming, and useful for local families,” WAS said on its webpage for the event. “Whether you have visited the observatory many times or have never been before, your perspective is valuable.”

WAS opens the observatory for public viewings on Wednesday nights, if the skies are clear. The organization also holds free monthly lectures from experts to talk about astronomy. The talks are free and also posted online.
