Jazz Andy Farber

WESTPORT–Saxophonists Andy Farber and Greg Wall will “battle” at the VFW Post 399 this Thursday, Oct. 15. The show is part of the Jazz at the Post series, which offers a new concert each Thursday, presented by the Jazz Society of Fairfield County.

According to the release, Farber and Wall will bring their tenor saxophones as they step into the legendary lineage of the music’s greatest two-tenor battles. Accompanying will be Bob Albanese on piano, Jennifer Vincent on bass and Tony Jefferson on drums.

Following the fiery footsteps of historic saxophone duos like Johnny Griffin and Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims, and Dexter Gordon and Wardell Gray, these two powerhouse horn players will be pushing each other to creative heights, honoring a classic jazz tradition where the only true winner is the audience.

Musical sets begin at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. The 7 p.m. set cover charge is $20 ($15 for students / veterans). The cover fee for the late set is $10.

An optional dinner from Chef Derek Furino will be served from 6:15 p.m., no reservations required.

The Jazz Society of Fairfield County offers “free or low-cost concerts by accomplished artists, outreach to under-served audiences, and educational and performance opportunities for student, amateur and emerging professional musicians,” its website says.

Since 2015, the organization has worked with Post 399 to bring the weekly jazz event to the post’s home on the Saugatuck River, featuring “celebrated jazz artists such as Ethan Iverson, Antonio Hart, David Kikoski, Harvie S and Joe Farnsworth as well as introducing our audience to the new generation of musicians moving the tradition forward,” the society’s website says.
