RIDGEFIELD — Another convincing win for the Staples High football team Friday was highlighted by a record-setting game by Shane Sandrew.

Staples toppled the host Ridgefield Tigers 35-7 Friday night as Sandrew caught 12 passes to tie a school record and racked up 143 receiving yards to lead a strong offensive performance.

Quarterback Nick Weil continues to slot nicely into the starting role, completing 21 of 29 pass attempts for 297 yards.

With the game tied 7-7, co-captain Charley Leahy had a strip sack early in the second quarter to help spark the win.

The Wreckers went on to put points on the board off the turnover and built a 21-7 halftime lead.

Sandrew scored two TDs, junior Justin Halkey (who had four receptions for over 100 yards) also had a pair of touchdowns.

Co-captain Kody Goldman picked up a rushing TD to close out the scoring for the Wreckers.

Staples, which beat Hamden 48-7 in the season opener, will host Maloney of Meriden at 7 p.m. next Friday. (Game schedules are subject to change; click for the latest updates.)
