WESTPORT — Two sisters from Westport made history as coxswains for two boats that won gold medals in their divisions at the recent Head of the Charles regatta in Boston.
Mia Khamish, a sophomore at Duke University, and Isabelle Khamish, a junior at Staples High School, served as coxswains for boats that each finished first in their respective competitions. The regatta, the largest in the country, took place Oct. 20-22 on the Charles River.
The sisters made history as the first Connecticut-native coxswains to win gold at the regatta at the same time.
Mia Khamish was coxswain for Duke University’s Women’s Collegiate 4 boat, which finished first out of 57 boats, beating among others, boats from Harvard, Penn, Columbia, Dartmouth and MIT.
Isabelle Khamish was coxswain for the Connecticut Boat Club’s Youth 4+ boat, which finished first out of 90 boats, including Greenwich, Philips Academy, Exeter, Rye, Brookline and others.
Both Khamish sisters were trained by Liz Trond, head coach at the Connecticut Boat Club, a nonprofit, all-girls team based in Norwalk.
