WESTPORT – It wasn’t pretty for Staples, but the Wreckers overcame a strong first half performance by the Danbury Hatters to win their fourth straight.
The Wreckers trailed by as many as 11 points in the first quarter. Even with a last-second layup by Staples senior Caleb Tobias, they were down by 23-13 heading into the second quarter.
On the back of seniors Jack Murphy and Ryan Phelps, the Wreckers were able to climb back into the game. Phelps had another strong outing, following his 30-point game against Greenwich. Murphy provided a late spark in the second quarter, with a couple of buckets as Staples took a two-point lead at the half, 33-31.
It was far from an easy journey in the third however, as the two teams exchanged lead changes and ties, for a good while, before another Phelps-led rally pushed Staples to a strong lead. A late streak and buzzer-beating layup by Phelps to end the third gave Staples a 59-47 lead over their opponents, a lead they would never give back.
Even with a fourth-quarter scare, Staples put another win in the books. Final: Wreckers 72, Hatters 62.
Staples takes its 7-2 record to Stamford to play Westhill Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
