WESTPORT — The feature match on Thursday’s FCIAC boys soccer calendar pitted two undefeated teams: Staples (3-0-0) and Stamford (3-0-1).

Both are still unbeaten. They tied 1-1 at Wakeman Field, in a scintillating match.

The two sides — mirror images of each other, with short-passing possession styles, individual and team speed, and strong goalkeepers — battled end to end for 80 minutes, and settled for one point each.

The Wreckers struck first, in the 34th minute. Chase Watkins’ corner kick found the head of Zach Beebe, who headed it low and to the far post. It snuck past keeper Christian Vitti, whose stellar match included sure hands, and several punch saves on difficult balls.

His Staples counterpart, Nick Sikorski, had an equally solid outing. He commanded his box well, came out strongly when he had to, and led his defensive corps of Beebe, Santi Alfageme, Adam Syah and Gabe Hellman with authority.

The Black Knights’ goal came in the 54th minute, on a cross from the right side.

Both teams had chances in the waning minutes, but were denied by Sikorski and Vitti.

The Wreckers — now 3-0-1 — head to Darien on Saturday. Kickoff is noon. (Game schedules are subject to change; click for the latest CIAC updates.)
