WESTPORT–Down a pair of runs and down to its final at bat, the Staples baseball team pulled out a dramatic 6-5 victory over visiting FCIAC foe Darien on Monday afternoon.
Jules Cicero singled home the deciding run after Mark Kelly belted a two-run homer to tie the score.
Kelly not only came up clutch at the plate but delivered on the mound. The pitcher did not allow a run and surrendered just one hit over two and a third innings of relief work, striking out two and walking one.
Lukas Snow started the game and allowed six hits and five runs (four earned) over four and two thirds frames, striking out five and walking just one.
Staples battled back throughout the game. The Wreckers fell behind 3-0 in the second inning and scored twice in the bottom of the frame, saw Darien go up 5-2 in the top of the fifth and got a run back in the home half of that inning, before the seventh-inning heroics.
Leadoff hitter Cicero had three of the Wreckers’ nine hits. Staples had eight walks led by a pair each by Jack Jacob and Connor Brill.
Staples has won six in a row and carries a 7-3 overall record into a game at Greenwich Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.
