Top-seed St. Bernard High of Uncasville ended the Staples High boys basketball team’s state championship hopes with a 63-50 win over the No. 7 Wreckers Sunday night.

The Staples’ loss came in the Division II title game at Mohegan Sun Arena in the tourney champ’s hometown.

Staples was coming off a wild 57-55 overtime upset of No. 3 Fairfield Wade in the semifinal round last Wednesday, overcoming an 18-point deficit in the fourth quarter. 

Staples also upset No. 2 Holy Cross of Waterbury in its run to the state tournament’s pinnacle game.
