GREENWICH – A freak goal for Greenwich, and a close miss by Staples, proved the difference in Tuesday’s boys soccer match at Steve Young Stadium.

The Cardinals scored the lone goal 31 seconds after halftime. A shot was headed wide, but caromed in off a Greenwich player who was not involved in the action. The Wreckers almost got the equalizer late in the match, but the attempt from inside the penalty area flew high by inches.

Staples, now 1-2-0, travels to Danbury on Friday. The game starts at 3:45 p.m.
