SHELTON — The Staples High hockey team won its third overtime game of the season Wednesday, with a 3-2 thriller against Trumbull at the Rinks at Shelton.
The Wreckers improved to 7-10 with a trio of regular-season games left to play.
Derek Wolgast scored twice, tying the game late in the third period and then netting the winner, when he sped through the neutral zone with the puck and drove to the net to finish the contest.
Wolgast gathered the puck in the defensive zone after Jameson Russell shot the puck off the glass to help the Wreckers break out. Russell had two assists in the game.
Harry Goodburn also scored and had an assist.
It was a wild final minute of regulation play with Wolgast knotting the score with just 30 seconds remaining.
Goaltender Mason Mountain came up huge with penalty shot save as only five seconds remained in regulation to force extra time. Mountain did an impressive split and made the toe save on the rare penalty shot. The Staples goalie made 25 saves as the Wreckers outshot Trumbull 39-27.
The Wreckers will take on Westhill-Stamford at 4 p.m. Monday at the Milford Ice Arena. (Game schedules are subject to change; click for the latest CIAC updates.)
