Pink Out Day for Staples Field Hockey
Pink Out Day for Staples Field Hockey

WESTPORT–The Westport Fire Department displayed the American flag high above the field in honor of the field hockey’s annual Pink Out day. The sun-drenched afternoon was the perfect setting for a bake sale raising funds for breast cancer awareness. With all that positive energy, the Staples Field Hockey dominated an over-matched Westhill team 9-0 on Ginny Parker Field Wednesday afternoon.

Westhill’s goaltender performed gallantly, turning aside numerous shots but facing what looked like a power play for much of the game.

Staples’ offense featured a balanced effort. Tyla Ozgen scored a hat trick, Jess Leon and Chloe Hackett each scored twice, with Romy Nussbaum and Emma Larit adding single goals. Charlotte Strange had two assists and Leon, Sofia Fidalgo and Sophia Blum each had one.

Staples now boasts a record of 10-1-1. Even though the post-season doesn’t begin until the second week of November, next Tuesday’s 4 p.m. game at New Canaan is critical. New Canaan is 12-0-0 and sits atop the FCIAC.

Games this week and next will go a long way to determining final seeding at the top of the ultra competitive conference.
