WESTPORT — The Staples field hockey team, not unlike much of the regular season, has dominated the competition to begin Class L State Tournament action.

The top-seeded Wreckers followed up Wednesday’s 9-1 win over No. 16 Stamford in the first round with a 10-0 triumph over No. 8 Amity of Woodbridge in Friday’s quarterfinal.

That sets up a clash with FCIAC foe and No. 4 Fairfield Ludlowe in Tuesday’s semis (site and time to be determined).

In the win over Stamford, Tyla Ozgen led the way with three goals and Alex Hackett scored twice.

Catherine Cirasuolo, Storey Ahl, Leah Larit and Eve Dolan also found the back of the cage.

Sofia Fidalgo had four assists Dolan and Mary Stevens also had assists.

Against Amity, the Wreckers provided more of the same with a solid team effort propelling the Wreckers into the next round. Staples scored in transition as well as off penalty corner with Cirasuolo inserting the ball to Emma Larit to set things up.

Tyla Ozgen and Fidalgo both scored three times. Hackett, Leah Larit, Emma Larit and Cirasuolo also scored. Stevens, Leah Larit, Hackett and Fidalgo all had assists.

Coach Ian Tapsall left his starters in throughout the game with a plan.

“I still need to keep the intensity. I don’t want them to rest on their laurels,” said Tapsall, noting the competition stands to get tougher as the tourney unfolds.

Eve Dolan controls the ball for Staples.

Assuming Staples beats Ludlowe that may set up a rematch of the FCIAC Championship between Staples and Darien, won by Staples in overtime. No. 2 Darien is set to take on either No. 3 Wilton or No. 6 Glastonbury, who meet Saturday.

Assuming Staples and Darien meet yet again Tapsall believes it will be another close one.

“It boils down to tactics and a little bit of luck of the bounce of the ball,” the coach said.
