WESTPORT–The host Staples baseball team dealt New Canaan its first loss after a 5-0 start to the spring, posing a 7-0 victory behind pitcher Bruce Schlegelmilch’s seven-hit performance on Friday.

Going the distance, Schlegelmilch walked three and struck out four batters as the Wreckers improved to 3-3. The Wrecker right hander helped his own cause with a hit, walk and run scored.

Staples jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first and added two runs in each the third and fourth innings, more than enough support for their hurler who threw 101 pitches, 66 for strikes.

Chase Landgraf had three singles and drove in three runs to lead the offense. Mason Tobias had two hits, including a double, and drove in two. Connor Brill had two hits, including a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Jules Cicero doubled and scored, Mark Kelly had a hit and scored twice. Landgraf and Cicero each had a stolen base.

Staples was coming off a 3-1 loss to visiting St. Joseph of Trumbull on Tuesday and had lost three straight following a 2-0 start. The Wreckers visit Brien McMahon on Monday at 4 p.m.
