WESTPORT — Staples High’s football team celebrated Thanksgiving with a 24-13 victory over Greenwich, upending their undefeated FCIAC foe.

The Wreckers, who had an 8-1 record going into Thursday’s game, traveled to Greenwich to take on the Cardinals for their traditional Thanksgiving showdown.

Quarterback Caleb Smith completed 13 of 20 passes for 209 yards and a 69-yard touchdown pass to Max Maurillo.

Smith also carried the ball 20 times for 95 yards and a pair of TDs.

Sam Petrosino had seven catches for 84 yards and Ryan Skolnick caught four receptions for 24 yards.

Maurillo had an interception, made three extra points and kicked a field goal.

Staples claims the No. 1 rank in the Class LL State standings by virtue of its win over Greenwich.

Staples will host No. 8-ranked Fairfield Prep (4-6) for a quarterfinal state tournament game at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

In last year’s Thanksgiving Day clash, Staples also came out on top, edging Greenwich in a 39-38 thriller.
