RIDGEFIELD–Russell Oost-Lievense debuted a young, exciting squad Thursday afternoon in Ridgefield.
Though few players have varsity experience, they shook off early nerves. Two strong goals – one from Dylan Hoke’s head, the other from Avery Mueller’s foot – powered the Wreckers to a 2-0 win at Tiger Hollow. The match was the season opener for both sides – and for Oost-Lievense. He succeeds Dan Woog at the helm, as only the fourth head coach in Staples boys soccer’s 64-year history.

Hoke’s goal, in the 61st minute, came off a lacing cross from Mueller. Mueller’s goal came off a nifty passing sequence from Lucas Carpi and Zach Gorin. Nick Sikorski got the shutout in goal, with help from defenders Ben Douglas, Hunter Smith, Cole Lieberman, Alex Kuster and Cormac Mulvey.

Staples hosts New Canaan on Saturday (10 a.m.) at Loeffler Field, in their first home match.
