WESTPORT — Dozens of swimmers will be making a point — actually, a “Point-to-Point” — in the 44th annual open water swim of the same name, hosted July 16 at Compo Beach by the Westport Weston Family YMCA.
The mile-long swim, one of Westport’s most venerable sporting events, gets underway with in-person registration at 7 a.m. Sunday, July 16.
The event, which raises money for the Y’s aquatics programs, including safety lessons, kicks off near the Compo Beach cannons and covers a GPS-routed, one-mile loop.
Registration before July 16 costs $60 per entrant. To register online, click here. Signups on the day of the event, in person, cost $75 and begin at 7 a.m.
The swim, which draws competitors from around the Northeast, will officially begin at 8:05 a.m. with five swimmers at a time going every five seconds, according to event organizers.
New this year, an automated, chip-based aquatic timing system will record swimmers’ times.
The top three finishers among both men and women competitors will win awards. Registered swimmers get an official “Point-to-Point” swim cap and T-shirt.
The YMCA is again partnering with My Team Triumph for this year’s swim, enabling people with disabilities to participate by pairing them with able-bodied coaches. Special-needs athletes should register in advance here.
Anyone with questions about the Point-to-Point swim or who may be interested in volunteering at the event, should contact Josephine Rojas at 203-226-8981 or jrojas@westporty.org.
